The History of SAPOR

SAPOR is the southern chapter of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR). The chapter was organized by Charles Powers of the Research Triangle Institute, and was officially accepted by the AAPOR council in January 1978.

SAPOR's first conference was held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in November of 1978. At that time, the chapter consisted of 90 members from nine states. In the early 1980s the chapter lapsed into a period of inactivity that lasted about three years, but since 1986 has held an annual conference. About one hundred individuals are currently involved with SAPOR.

Our annual conference is held in early October in Raleigh, North Carolina and our Mid-Year Event is held in late March in Atlanta, Georgia.
